Under glaze painting by students

As part of both the Beginner’s Course as well as the Advanced Course of Pottery and Ceramics, I teach students various methods of glazing and surface decoration.

At the Beginner’s level, we quickly brush over various techniques and try out a variety of colours and textures. At the advanced level, I encourage students to experiment a little on their own and to also think about how to harmonize the glaze with the design of their piece.

In the picture below, Ashlesha tries her hand at some “underglaze” painting. As the name suggests, this is painting with coloured slips and pigments before application of the glaze coat.
