A potter’s life in Kutch. Part xx

Threatened by the rampant growth of industry and the commons being sold to industry, the potters of Gundyali were losing their source of clay. The land that had been used by the kumbhars for generations. Fortunately for the village of Gundyali, they had the strength of numbers. So they all got together and raised the issue with the village sarpanch who further escalated it to the government. After a long process, the government finally agreed to allot 15 acres of land near the village exclusively to the kumbhars of Gundyali. This carved out 15-acre land would belong to the government but the clay on the land would no belong to the kumbhars strictly for pottery.
